What is KNH kids

KNH Kids is a scheme aimed at encouraging local children to be good neighbours.

It involves KNH staff from a variety of roles, as well as key partners from other agencies, working junior schools in Kirklees (Hillside Primary, Newsome and Fieldhead Junior, Birstall, Ashbrow Junior in Deighton and Westmoor Junior School in Dewsbury Moor to date).

The aim of the scheme is to encourage good behaviour amongst 7-11 year olds and for them to become more aware of how their behaviour impacts on their homes and communities.

Working with teachers, frontline housing staff have helped develop lessons on various topics relating to the theme of citizenship. The children have learned about getting involved in their communities, respecting each other, how to remain healthy and active and how to participate in community projects.

Other KNH Kids initiatives include sponsoring school trips, school clothing and good behaviour awards.

We've also developed a DVD and teaching pack. The film has been produced to encourage children to think about the consequences of their actions and to foster a sense of respect and responsibility.

Called Give Respect, Get Respect, it tells the story of a boy who gets involved in anti-social behaviour, but turns his life around after seeing his grandma hurt herself when she confronts a group of youths.

The film features young local actors and have a street style that audiences can relate to. The production company worked alongside teachers and youngsters throughout the scripting, filming and editing, to make sure the key messages are conveyed appropriately and effectively for the age group.
The DVD pack also includes teaching materials to stimulate debate and discussion as part of the PSHE (physical, social, health and emotional well being) curriculum. All Kirklees schools have received their own copy.

As with other benefits we are constantly looking at ways to improve KNH Kids. We are currently working with our key partners to develop the programme by including additional key stage 2 schools. We are also in the process of developing a KNH Kids style programme for key stage 3 and 4 schools within Kirklees.
